Don't let the surprising box-office success of this psychological thriller fool you; it's neither scary enough to qualify as a successor to Hitchcock’s Psycho, nor sufficiently well acted to simply enjoy on its own limited merits. A handful of thespians from Hollywood's B-list do a riff on the "trapped in the haunted house of a madman" storyline, without generating the kind of tension director James Mangold, (Cop Land) obviously sought. Note to the director; a thundering soundtrack married to overly abrupt cuts should be used sparingly; like garlic, they have a tendency to offend when overused
