For a provenance worthy of adulation by the likes of People Magazine and Entertainment Tonight, it would be hard to beat this labored romantic comedy adapted from a book of the same name written by Greg Behrendt, executive story editor of the hit television series Sex & The City. This mannered, self-conscious sit-com traces the misadventures of eight characters in search of urban love and commitment. The cast features some of Hollywood’s most familiar sub-40 faces (Ben Affleck, Jennifer Anniston, Scarlett Johansson, Drew Barrymore among them) in 4 tales of lust, rejection, infidelity and incredibly boorish behavior that veers from the sickly sentimental to the darkly spiteful. Imagine 4 inter-locked episodes of T.V.’s Friends series, half of which seem to feature characters on Prozac and you have some idea of the dreadfully annoying experience produced by watching this artless contrivance.

Half of one couple lies and cheats, while another pairing struggles with commitment on one side but not the other. Obsessive women pursue men who seem clueless about the angst they’re causing while asking themselves over and over again what the women in their lives really want… and there’s not a single honest character or scene in the entire proceedings.

Some movies don’t deserve the time it takes to see them; others aren’t even worthy of being reviewed.

This is an example of the latter.
